Death: 07-03-1965

Amirbai Karnataki was born in Bilgi, a village in Bijapur district.
Amirbai’s father was a weaver. Of his five daughters Gauharbai and
Amirbai earned fame and fortune. Amirbai had passed matriculation. She
came to Mumbai when she was only 16 years old. The incharge of HMV
made her sing a qawaali which gave her immense popularity. Elder
sister Gauhar was an actress and Amirbai became an actress with
`Vishnubhakti’ . But what changed her fortunes was `Kismat’ (1943).
Anil Biswas made her sing some memorable songs for the film and her
voice reached very nook and corner of the country.

Amirbai was a singing star and then became a playback singer. She
earned great fame till 1947. Bharathhari, Caravan, Amrapali, Shikari,
Aath Din, Leela, Sindoor were some films where her voice created a
magic spell. Later it was Lata’s turn to rule the singing world.
Amirbai started acting along with giving playback. In stunt oriented
films she played the heroine’s role and in good films she played
character actor roles. She gave music in `Shehnaaz’.

She had married Badri Kanchwala, editor of `Paras’.
